It was too quiet in his room alone. He understood that they needed the footage to be consistent with every other episode. They always had cameras in the host’s, medium’s, and demonologist’s rooms overnight. So he’d gone down to the shared bathroom and cleaned himself up before making sure the stupid camera was on up there on top of the wardrobe and getting into bed.

But now all Max could hear was the odd creak or groan of a very old building cooling off for the night. No gentle sounds from the warm man surrounding him. No little whispers in the dark. Just silence. Nothing to distract him from his tumultuous thoughts.

And he needed to stop thinking. He didn’t want to think about the fact that he was part angel—a magical, inter-dimensional being—or that he could change his entire body to reflect that heritage, or that he really wanted to go back and…and sleep with Sal. Like actually just sleep with him. He hadn’t done that in years, not even with his cheating, alcoholic ex. They’d kept things way more professional, but with Sal…

Oh, hey, didn’t that one app on his phone have a setting for white noise?

Grateful to shut his brain up, Max was just reaching for his phone when hands suddenly wrapped around his ankle. He flinched and gasped, and they pulled him clean out of bed.

Hollering, he hit the floor ass first, the hands disappearing. Sitting up, he swung to hit whoever it was, but only punched the air. He scrambled backward, fumbling for the bedside lamp, as the door connecting his room to Sal’s banged open. Sal stood illuminated in the doorway, and Max managed to get to his feet.

“Someone grabbed me,” he panted, heart hammering as he stared around the…the empty room. “The fuck? I definitely felt hands on my leg. There was someone in here!”

Max rushed to the wardrobe and flung open the doors, but there was no one hiding inside. The door to the hall was closed and locked. “Can demons walk through walls?” he asked just before Sal grabbed him into a hug.

“No, we can’t, so I’m not leaving your side.”

Max would’ve protested that statement if it weren’t for the way a shiver went through Sal’s body. Instead, Max wrapped his arms around Sal’s middle and held on just as tightly. “I’m okay,” he whispered.

Sal nodded, his quick breaths fanning Max’s neck from where he’d tucked his face against him. Max clung a little tighter, realizing he’d scared Sal. His demon was afraid of losing him.

Why was this so okay? He should be telling Sal to calm down, back off, and focus on doing something to figure out who and how someone got in here and grabbed him. But he didn’t want to. Not yet. He wanted to let himself settle while he held onto Sal for just a moment more.

Then it was Sal who pulled away enough to look around. “You check the camera, and I’ll poke around.”

“Right. Yeah.”

As Sal stepped around
